The Affinity Project
- We want to be a part of the change, not a barrier to it -
In an ideal world, who a person is or what they look like wouldn’t matter when discovering a new passion. Unfortunately in cycling, who we see on the road doesn't reflect the diversity of people that have an affinity for cycling. This is prevalent across many sports, but is especially visible within the cycling community.
— Why is this imbalance so pronounced in cycling? —
Culturally, the sport remains burdened with unspoken ‘rules’ and gatekeeping behavior. This leaves those who don’t fit the ‘standard’ feeling that it’s not a space for them.
Additionally, cycling has other barriers to entry such as cost. Buying your first bike often requires significant investment, and choosing the right bike (for you) can be confusing and difficult. It can have a huge impact on your enjoyment of the sport.
Bike shops are intimidating, especially if you are new to the sport or from a less represented community.
— Where do you start? What questions should you ask? —
Everyone’s body is different, and everyone has different goals. Frames and size charts are historically designed for and tailored to the most represented group, who have been cycling for most of their lives (in other words, not very helpful for the rest of us).
Statistically speaking, ‘average’ works for very few among us, and the chance that you will have to spend extra money to tailor your bike to your body is very high. Just another potential barrier to participating in our beloved sport!
That is why Balanced Bikefits started 'The Affinity Project'. Lowering the cost of bike fits with the aim of making the cycling landscape a more equitable and positive place where everyone can be themselves.
— How it works: —
All bike fits are 30% off for people from underrepresented groups* or who are looking for a safe, supportive space.
Aside from bike fits, please feel free to reach out, whether you need purchasing advice or have other bike-related questions - we are here to help!
See you soon!
*We recognise that everyone’s experience is different. Underrepresented groups include (but are not limited to) women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ communities, people who are neurodivergent, individuals with a disability, or anyone who needs support with costs due to low income. We will never question someone’s identity or require proof for using this service.
Balanced Bikefits & Gregario Cycling Services are committed to a path of listening and learning with the aim of being an open-minded, inclusive, and welcoming space.
During this period of learning we recognise that mistakes will be made. We understand that we don’t have all the answers and are open to constructive feedback.
